Who is Tracy Uwom?
My name is Tracy Uwom, and I am just like you, I started my business life in 2008, I got married in 2007 and had my first baby same year, I didn’t know anything about business, hadn’t worked in a corporate organisation before now.
After delivery, I needed to start doing something, so I started a printing business with one printer and staff, her salary was N30,000, I still remember because I wasn’t sure how I was going to generate income, I wasn’t thinking of myself then, I just wanted to make sure I did not owe salary.
The business grew, and we became a household name in Ph Nigeria, as at 2017, I closed it down, we were over 15 staff members.
During my courtship and wedding period, I also realized there weren’t places I knew where we could buy wedding rings as my brother-in-law had to import our wedding bands. This got me thinking, and i decided to start a wedding and engagement ring company. It grew slowly as it wasn’t my main business at the time, my printing business was my cash cow, and I used it to fund the jewelry business.
By 2015, we had started gaining momentum, I registered the name Saint TRACY. By 2016 we opened our 2nd branch in Lagos Nigeria, and as at today we have 4 branches. With our growth came the problems, I could only manage one branch at a time, and I wasn’t even doing a good job at at that. How was I supposed to manage four (4) branches simultaneously?
My staff were resigning any time and there was nothing I could do, I had to always recruit new staff. My staff came late to work and there was no way I could know and penalize. No one was taking responsibility for their actions, they didn’t understand why I was so particular about customer service, so they did what they thought was okay. They were closing the shop before closing time and I couldn’t control it. When I traveled, I was always on the phone, monitoring, calling every branch and I was always upset. I was shouting everyday, it wasn’t easy at all.
I attended Lagos business school to learn about business, in 2015 This really helped me, as I started implementing some things I learnt in EDC. I enrolled for Tara Fela-Durotoyes structure class in 2017 and this opened my eyes on how I needed to create structure in my company if I wanted to have peace of mind. I actually enrolled for the course twice because I needed to eat, breath and speak structure.
After the course, I still needed to hire a consultant who helped me create policies in my business and document all our structures. I have now implemented structure in the last 3 years and I can tell you its one of the best decisions I have made.
